Pushing double digits

Research compiled for the Eurasia Payments Report shows that in many countries across the region, card numbers recorded double digit growth in 2009 in spite of the crisis, an encouraging move along the road to a cashless society. In spite of this, and an ever growing number of mobile payment trials across the region, however there is little evidence of an integrated strategy to drive electronic payments usage and decrease the use of cash.

As Mehmet Sezgin of Garanti Payment Systems noted this fortnight, electronic payments can play a valuable role in helping reduce the size of the informal economy. It may be time for the region to embrace this notion for the benefit of consumers and governments alike.
